An Integrated Analysis of Radial Velocities in Planet Searches

چکیده
We discuss a Bayesian approach to the analysis of radial velocities in planet searches. We use a combination of exact and approximate analytic and numerical techniques to efficiently evaluate χ for multiple values of orbital parameters, and to carry out the marginalization integrals for a single planet including the possibility of a long term trend. The result is a robust algorithm that is rapid enough for use in real time analysis that outputs constraints on orbital parameters and false alarm probabilities for the planet and long term trend. The constraints on parameters and odds ratio that we derive compare well with previous calculations based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, and we compare our results with other techniques for estimating false alarm probabilities and errors in derived orbital parameters. False alarm probabilities from the Bayesian analysis are systematically higher than frequentist false alarm probabilities, due to the different accounting of the number of trials. We show that upper limits on the velocity amplitude derived for circular orbits are a good estimate of the upper limit on the amplitude of eccentric orbits for e . 0.5.

Adaptive Scheduling Algorithms for Planet Searches
High-precision radial velocity planet searches have surveyed ∼2000 nearby stars and detected ∼130 planets. While these same stars likely harbor many additional planets, they will become increasingly challenging to detect, as they tend to have relatively small masses and/or relatively long orbital periods. Therefore, observers are increasing the precision of their observations, continuing to mon...
متن کاملNo evidence of a hot Jupiter around HD 188753 A ⋆
Context. The discovery of a short-period giant planet (a hot Jupiter) around the primary component of the triple star system HD 188753 has often been considered as an important observational evidence and as a serious challenge to planet-formation theories. Aims. Following this discovery, we monitored HD 188753 during one year to better characterize the planetary orbit and the feasibility of pla...
متن کاملThe architecture of the GJ 876 planetary system Masses and orbital coplanarity for planets b and c ⋆
We present a combined analysis of previously published high-precision radial velocities and astrometry for the GJ 876 planetary system using a self-consistent model that accounts for the planet-planet interactions. Assuming the three planets so far identified in the system are coplanar, we find that including the astrometry in the analysis does not result in a best-fit inclination significantly...
متن کاملthe disk of its parent star
Planets orbiting other stars could in principle be found through the periodic dimming of starlight as a planet moves across—or ‘transits’—the line of sight between the observer and the star. Depending on the size of the planet relative to the star, the dimming could reach a few per cent of the apparent brightness of the star. Despite many searches, no transiting planet has been discovered in th...
متن کاملStatus and Prospects of Planetary Transit Searches: Hot Jupiters Galore
The first transiting extrasolar planet, orbiting HD 209458, was a Doppler wobble planet before its transits were discovered with a 10 cm CCD camera. Wide-angle CCD cameras, by monitoring in parallel the light curves of tens of thousands of stars, should find hot Jupiter transits much faster than the Doppler wobble method. The discovery rate could easily rise by a factor 10. The sky holds perhap...
